I grew up in the 1960s in Grand Rapids, Michigan – the son of a English/Swiss aerospace technician and a Okinawan beautician – which is probably why I’ve always been attracted to both technology as well as beauty, whether the written word, visual art or music. Despite a few challenges along the way, I’ve had a great life with many blessings, opportunities and lessons. The more people I meet and the more I see of this world, the more I realize I’m a lucky bastard. For this I am grateful.
Also, the older I get and the more I learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know. That’s led to a life of exploration, learning and stretching myself. That life has taken me far from my Michigan roots, but I intend to keep exploring – there’s too much to see and do in this world!
I’ve had the great fortune of living all over the US and in Canada, excelling in two careers: one in programming/systems development (1979-1991) and one in marketing (1992-today). I’ve helped launch many big brands onto the Internet or take them further into online and social marketing, including BMW, Brita, the Clinton Administration, Clorox, De Beers, FedEx, Ford, GE, Intel, Johnson & Johnson, Kraft Foods, Mattel, Mercury, the Mayo Clinic, RCA, Volkswagen of America, and many many more. I’ve named public companies, created logos, ad campaigns, radio spots, trade show booths…formed startups and JVs, configured servers, designed network topologies, written business plans (that got funded), as well as taglines, video soundtracks and technical manuals. This, of course, makes me incredibly difficult to place in a role.
I am married to an incredibly fun, open-minded beauty, and have three smart, talented offspring as well. I spend my free time helping with social causes (public water, renewable energy, and local homelessness) as well as exploring photography, videography, reading and travel.
